RANT!

What ever happened to art?
No, not that kind of art, I mean good art. And by "good," I mean "old." Back during the Renaissance, they cranked out great artists like it was nothing. Those artists are STILL regarded as the best painters in history. Hell, they named the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after them, hundreds of years after they died. In 200 years, will they be talking about today's modern artists the same way we talk about the ancient masters? Not a chance.

Here is an example of today's "art" that got me started on this whole rant.

Yes, that's right, he translated the book of Genesis into pig latin, and calls it art. And according to his website, he has translated the entire Bible, but doesn't have enough disk space to post it all. This guy, however, is hardly unique in the world of modern art. People do all sorts of completely stupid things and call it art. (Read Dave Barry for more examples of modern "art")

Anyway, here is my point. Art should be pretty. If you are an artist, and all of your creations look like shit, or even worse, are literally made out of shit, STOP!

The NYC arches from a few months ago, that was unique and garnered attention for the work and its artist. (not enough for me to remember his name, but still)
That was the best of modern art. Abstraction with a message. And it was beautiful.

What I'm trying to say is that it is possible to be unique without also being stupid.

This is a case of someone with way too much fucking time on their hands.

In prison with a Blackberry maybe?

Since my blog is so awesome, I can see how Mr. Anonymous would think that I must have spent all my time working on it. But in fact I really don't spend a whole lot of time blogging.

One thing I definitely don't do is waste time reading random blogs on the internet, commenting on how others are wasting time. That would be pretty hypocritcal and stupid of me.

Anyway, I'm going back to my cell so I can recharge the batteries on my Blackberry. It's weird. The prison guards confiscated all my possessions and monitor my phone calls, and yet they let me have this Blackberry allowing me uncensored communication to the outside world.

What happened to great art is the same thing that happened to great music. People have become too lazy, uneducated and stupid produce masterpieces of either.

That's a pretty cynical view there Ranger. I'm going to have to disagree.

I wouldn't call modern artists lazy or uneducated. In fact, modern artists are well motivated and well schooled. I would go as far as to say people have become TOO educated about art. In my opinion, artists are overanalyzing the market and their own works. Today's artists seem to be focusing on what their piece is trying to communicate, rather than the aesthetic value of the piece itself. The result of which, in my opinion, is an ugly and stupid piece of "art" that misses the forest for the trees.

My rant is about redirecting the focus of the artist back to aesthetics, rather than trying to demean the artist's skills. I believe that there is just as much pure talent today as there ever was, it's just that the talent is being wasted.

And as for music, Yo-Yo Ma is incredible. The great music is still here, it is merely being drowned out by the sheer multitude and variety of musicians.
