I Saw A Tree Today

I saw a tree today.

It’s the middle of winter, but this single tree still had all of its leaves. They were weathered and wrinkled, but still, they hung onto that tree as if it was summer. And at first glance, I admired the tree. I marveled at the tree’s resistance to change with the seasons, and thought to myself, "Now that’s real bravery."

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I was wrong to admire the stubbornness of the tree. All of the tree’s leaves were dead and withered. The tree gained nothing by holding on, and was probably devoting much needed nutrients to the leaves that should have fallen off months ago. Only by letting go of the old leaves can new leaves begin to grow.

To resist change is to resist life itself.

The moment I decided to leave MSU was when I finished writing this, almost exactly one year ago.

My perception of the world has changed drastically in that short time, and almost everything that I thought I knew has been altered or completely abandoned. But this tree and its lesson have remained, still as powerful to me as it was when I first wrote it.
