I just ate something called a honeydew-nectarine. It's about the same size as a normal nectarine, and it has a stone, but it is light green in color, and the flesh is white. And as you would expect, it tasted like a blend of honeydew and nectarine. It was a little weird, but I liked it.
It was the first genetically modified organism (GMO) that I ever consciously bought solely because it was a GMO. And I have to say (Greenpeace, I'm talking to you) that I like them better than organics. That's right, I said GMO's are better than organics. I can hear the outcry now.
Organics are healthy, GMO's will kill you.
Oraganics taste better.
You're why local farms are bankrupt.
BULLSHIT! The whole point of engineering the food is to make it better. A GMO tomato modified to be disease resistant is JUST AS HEALTHY as any normal tomato. And if you lived in the developing world, GMO's might save your life. http://www.goldenrice.org/
As for the taste, it comes down to personal preference. I personally don't have a refined enough pallete to appreciate the subtle differences. I'll take the generic $1.99 "toasted oats" over the $4.99 "Organic Cheerios." It all tastes the same to me.
I am sorry about the local farmers, but not sorry enough to stop buying GMO's. It's the same reason people shop at the big boxes (walmart, best buy, target, etc) The same or better products at a lower cost.
The bio-farms can give me better food for less money. And they can give me honeydew-nectarines.

I think one of your last sentences sums up your point best:
"The bio-farms can give me better food for less money."
Hard to argue against that.
