I like Bill Simmons as much as the next guy, but Beckham's MLS debut did not demolish the sanctity of sports. It was overhyped, agreed, but he is the most recognizeable proffesional athlete in the world. Of course he would be overhyped. Beckham eating dinner in L.A. is overhyped, does this ruin anyone's appetite?
I agree with his points: MLS is inferior to most European leagues, and most of the soccer playing kids today will eventually lose interest. But how this ruins his summer, I don't understand. If the point is that Americans don't care, how is Beckham's arrival depressing?
Even if I thought it was bad news that Beckham was joining the Galaxy, there is no way it is comparable to Bonds/Donaghy/Vick.
"It's impossible to rank these events from most depressing to least depressing..." -Bill Simmons
Seriously? A player you don't care about plays 10 minutes of a meaningless game is just as depressing as the "greatest record in baseball" being broken by a cheater? Or that the NBA championship may have been compromised by a cheater? Or that NFL player you DO care about is potentially a dog-murdering felon and could possibly be facing a jail sentence and the end of his career?
To me, it seems pretty easy to rank these stories (Rosie omitted because I don't watch the show). In the order of most to least depressing:
1) Donaghy
2) Bonds
3) Vick
...
...
...
...
4) Beckham

Simmons is 0 for his last 2 in columns in my opinion. This one was just as weak as his last.
I agree with you completely. When I first read it I was dumbfounded that Beckham was even mentioned with the rest. It seemed to me that he was just trying to include all the major "stories" into on column. Bad idea.
I can't even take Simmons' side on this. He did not make a good arguement for his statement that Beckham's arrival was, 1) depressing, and 2) helped destroy the sanctity of sports.
Ridiculous.
I had to see what you thought about this, because I wasn't sure if I was missing a sarcastic tone or something. Thanks for the confirmation.
