Smog is Visual Pollution Too

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwasgPfsv4I

I don't agree with Greenpeace on much (see Frankenfruit post) but I'm behind them 100% on this one. One of the main arguments against building Cape Wind is that it would "wreck the aesthetic of the view." I don't live there, but I did see a rendering of what it would probably look like from shore, and I have two points.

http://www.capewind.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=9
1) They are visible, but not outstanding. Especially from Nantucket.
2) They don't seem ugly to me. I know this is a matter of personal opinion, but I like the way wind turbines look. I enjoy looking at them, and I would enjoy pointing them out to other people if I lived there. I see clean energy when I look at wind turbines.

This seems like a classic example of the "not in my backyard" effect. Everyone wants clean, renewable energy, but nobody wants to be near it. But if the very fact of existence is now considered pollution, then I have to say, I would much prefer the visual pollution of a wind turbine farm to breathing a cloud of noxious gas.

Have you ever seen an overhead view of Los Angeles? (or Mexico City or Cairo or Delhi or etc. etc. etc.)Smog is visual pollution too.

I don't think wind turbines are ugly either, but they do scare the crap out of me. I hate big machine-like things.

Like blimps. Blimps scare me.

But like you, I'd much rather have a scary wind turbine than a smog filled sky.

PS, I'm disappointed you didn't comment on my muffin post.

Would seeing a wind farm on the horizon when you look at the ocean scare you? Or in other words, if you had a choice, would you prefer not to look at them?

If I had a choice, I would not look at the wind farms.

There are a bunch in PA that sit on the mountainside, and although fascinated, struggle to look at them because they give me the goosebumps. It's a weird feeling; like technology is taking over the world.

At the same time, I would still choose them over a smog filled sky.

A) Are you against building Cape Wind?
B) If not, would you be if you lived in Cotuit or Craigville?

You know, at first I really thought that I wouldn't mind having them, but the more I think about it, I don't really want them.

A)No I'm not against building Cape Wind, but that's just because I never see the place.

B)Yes I would mind if I lived there, only if they were placed in places that affected my picturesque view. I'm selfish like that. If they're in my picture of the beach and sunset, I'm going to be pissed. They are quite scary.

Your viewpoint is disappointing, but very common. Maybe once the Sound starts to be destroyed by global warming and pollution, people will start to believe that the sacrifice is worth it.

But by then it will probably be too late...

Disappointing? If I'm buying something for the view, then I don't want it obstructed. Of course it's a common view, because it's logical. I buy a car to go places, and the after affect is more air pollution. I'm not an environmentalist, and won't pretend to be one. If I buy something for a view, then I want a view.
