Women's World Cup, Part 3

This was not the statement game that the US needed. We got a lucky deflection goal in the second minute of play. That's it. That was the extent of our scoring. Where are our set pieces? They were our strength coming into the tournament, they were terrible against Nigeria. Possesion was a little better, but still needs improvement. I remember one great sequence created by Lilly. A give-and-go to spring free, and a great cross that Wambach should have finished.

Which leads me to my next point: We need to improve our execution, especially finishing. Wambach excluded, we have two lucky goals. Other players, especially the midfielders, need to step up and start taking some shots. I want to see a quality goal from someone other than Wambach.

I'll give a small concession to the conditions, but we really need to pick up the level of play. England is looking surprisingly good, and they will give us a tough match.

Did you watch the game live or tape it?

I saw the highlight of the goal on ESPN.com and even I, the casual soccer fan, knew that was lucky.

Was Nigeria supposed to be any good by the way?

I watched most of it live, but I missed the last 10 or 15 minutes because I had to go to work.

And Nigeria is a terrible team. They are improving, but they still have a long way to go. I would rank them about 14th out of the 16 teams in the world cup.
