I remember a conversation Mike and I had as freshmen at MSU. He asked me what kind of music I liked, and I listed off several genres, but when I mentioned techno, he laughed. He assumed I was joking. (In Mike's defense, 90% of the things I told him were bullshit.)
And it's an easy enough assumption to make. I'm not the stereotypical techno fan. I'm not remixing tracks in my basement, I don't go to clubs, and I don't do drugs. So why do I listen? I've been asking myself that question for a while now, and I think I've come up with an answer. When I put on the headphones and crank it up, the music drowns out all of the bubbling background noise of thoughts and jokes and worries and whatever else is rattling around in my head. It is a respite from the constant insanity of my brain.
Some people smoke a joint...some people get drunk...I listen to techno. Well, that's a lie. I'm not really listening to the music. To be honest, I don't care at all about the music. What I'm actually listening to is the silence behind the music. The blessed stillness of thought.
Techno is my drug. Techno is my meditation. Techno is my escape.

I admit it, I throw secret lightswitch raves....
Hahaha I liked the video..."I heard they have to pump your stomach if you drink that..."
I guess I always found it odd that techno was your music of choice, but the way you explained it makes sense to me.
Or is your explanation part of the 90% bullshit?
I wouldn't go so far as to say that techno is my music of choice. If I had to name a favorite genre, I would say rock. As I tried to say in the post, it's not about the music at all.
But I do like techno, and I agree, it is odd.
And to be honest, I'm not sure if this post is bullshit or not...maybe I just like the beats?
