MLS Saturday

The first game today was the Chicago Fire against the Seattle Sounders. I have always liked the Fire, but in this game, I quickly found myself rooting for the Sounders.

I like Jaqua and Montero up front (I have always been a Nate Jaqua fan) and they have the legendary Kasey Keller in goal. Solid midfield with Ljungberg, solid defense, and a solid coach in Sigi Shmid (who coached Columbus to the MLS cup last year) Even the Seattle crowd is awesome. I like everything about this team. I can easily see the Sounders becoming my new favorite team.

The second game today was the LA Galaxy against the KC Wizards. I dislike the Galaxy despite my love of Landon Donovan (who scored a nice goal) But the best part of the game was easily this half-field shot from Claudio Lopez. That was fun.

Luck or skill? I'm sure it's a combination of both, but if you had to lean one way or the other, which would you lean?

I'd say 60-40 skill. In my opinion, you have to be skilled to kick the ball that far and have it come close to the goal. I'm sure it was lucky it went in, because I don't think he could do that 4 out of 5 times.

Seattle Sounders? Like after the Pugent Sound? If so, I like it. I like names that bring in references to the city/location they play for. Detroit Lions? What the fuck?

60-40 skill seems about right to me.

I have no idea why they are named the sounders. That seems like a reasonable explanation to me.

We'll go with that explanation then. The "Seattle Pugets" just doesn't have a ring to it.

Haha, the Seattle Pugents would be funny. But honestly, I'm not a fan of the team name "sounders" either.

I think I would prefer a random name not based around Seattle, like the Seattle Lions or something.

That's so generic though! It has no meaning!

Although we are the "Spartans", and I'm not sure what that has to do with an old agricultural college...but our logo/mascot/name is pretty fucking sweet.

Would you rather be a Spartan, or a Cornhusker?

I suppose if I was from Nebraska and grew up in an environment where corn husking was prevalant, I'd be proud to be a Cornhusker!

But I didn't grow up in the area and I don't particularly like corn as a vegetable, so to answer your question, no, I would not like to be a Cornhusker.

But I can appreciate the name, as retarted as it is. Do they not have anything else in Nebraska? How about the "Flatlanders". Sounds like the name of a rock band, yea? =)

If not corn, what would you say would be the prevailing feature of MSU when it was founded, and would you want to be named after that?

Ummm...I know we are good at turf management....so growing grass and making it look pretty?

Michigan State Turfers

Michigan State Turftans

Michigan State Grass Lovers

Nope, none of them have a ring to it.

How about the MSU Landgranters (or Landgrantees?)

Or are you willing to admit that sometimes a random name just sounds better?

I do admit they sound better! I'm just saying, I appreciate a name that ties the city/region into it a little more.

I actually researched names a bit.
Apparently our team names do have some local significance.

The Detroit Tigers were named after the Detroit Light Guard, who fought in the Civil and Spanish-American War, and played baseball on a team that they nicknamed, "Tigers". When pro baseball came about in Detroit, they used they took the nickname in honor of the military unit. Kind of neat. (all of this is from the book, "A Place for Summer: A Narrative History of Tiger Stadium"...imagine that, a whole book on Tiger Stadium. I mean, it's not even a city symbol/icon or anything...)

The Lions story...not as interesting. Apparently when they came into being they just wanted to keep with the "jungle cat" name theme, and chose 'Lions' to go with the already in existence 'Tigers'. But at least the name was adopted to fit with the city, um, cat names. It wasn't just random.

There's some useless information for you =).
