To Curse and To Laugh and To Mourn

All of us are warriors in our own way. We all have our own battles.

Each battle is unique to ourselves, every fight is an intensely personal affair. Yet although the battle is individual, the war is universal. Each man must fight alone, but he can take comfort in knowing that he is not the only one fighting. We are able to support one another through the common bonds of our humanity.

We fight by watching eagles soar. We fight with the scent of roses and the smiles of children. We fight with words, or with songs. We fight with pictures. We fight with poems. We fight with truth and with beauty and with love. We fight with every good thing, because for however much pain and suffering and destruction and despair that exists in this world, however much darkness, there is twice again as much light, and that joyous light is worth the struggle.

Here we become as artists and soldiers. And we all fight the darkness with our memory.

"Warriors, warriors we call ourselves. We fight for splendid virtue, for high endeavor, for sublime wisdom, therefore we call ourselves warriors."
