I Promise I'm not Dead

I'm not exactly sure why I stopped posting for a few months. I guess I needed some time away to re-generate the creative juices, and it just sort-of morphed into a sabbatical. Weird. But I'm not done with the blog project yet, and I think I will be posting a little more regularly, at least for now.

......probably.

Some Quick Randoms:

- I joined/helped create a book group. Our first official book is The Tycoons by Charles Morris.

- Annual Early-Christmas Rant: Thanksgiving is it's own damn holiday! It's not Christmas-phase 1. There are already radio stations around Lansing playing 24-hour Christmas carols, and I've been seeing more and more Christmas-related ads on TV. It's Thanksgiving season, not Christmas season. Celebrate Thanksgiving first!

- I actually convinced someone to doubt the existence of Euclidean rectangles. That's the first time my* argument has actually worked! I realize being happy about this makes me a dork. I don't care.

- I've slowly been weaning myself off of ESPN. I will still occasionally watch Around the Horn or PTI, but that's about it unless there is an actual game to watch.

- It is impossible for the Occupy Wall Street movement to succeed unless they can clearly define what success is and provide a realistic way of achieving it. There are too many differing opinions and personalities within the movement to come to an agreement about hardly anything, let alone what their goals are and how to reach them. Call me cynical, but I think the whole thing will shut down when the snow comes, and will be largely forgotten/ignored by the 2012 election.

*The argument was actually created by Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky. But I've co-opted it for myself because nobody I talk to has heard of any of them.

Glad you're blogging again!

Last weekend Grace and I were in Target and she flipped out when she saw it was totally decorated for Christmas. They had at least 5 aisles devoted to Xmas junk, too. But, her flip-out definitely reminded me of you.

How did you create the book group?

Haha, my favorite part of your Euclidean rectangles story is when you said, "This is the first time my argument has actually worked". Haha, the fact that you've had other arguments about it in the past...that's what makes you a dork! =)

Grace is totally justified in flipping out. Too early for Christmas!

There was already a core group of three guys that were meeting informally. My friend and I joined the group, and we lobbied to make it an official book group for Schuler Books (where he currently works)

One of his co-workers called us the Boring Book Club, so we've taken to calling ourselves the BBC.

Haha, sooner or later I tell everyone about the non-existence of rectangles. Hardly anyone ever listens though, suprisingly, not many people care about the difference between euclidean and non-euclidean geometry.

An official book group? How is that different from an unofficial book group?

Schuler's will put a BBC sticker on all the books we read and sell them for 20% off.

You get your own sticker with your group name on it? Do you get to design it or anything? That's pretty cool.

And your group's goal should be to read every book in the store. 20% off everything!!!!

Haha, no we didn't get to design the sticker. There are a lot of book clubs signed up with the store, they all have pretty much the same sticker except for the group name.

I think the 20% off deal is only valid on the current book, not on every book read by the group. But still, that's a noble goal to shoot for. Our next book will be The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. We're making progress!

Ah, "The Jungle". Remember reading that back in the day. I'm guessing there will be some good convo from it.

BTW, even after reading it, my opinion on hot dogs and other processed meats did not change. They are still delicious, and that's all that matters.

Now the way they are processed...that's a different story!
