If anyone doesn't know, NASA is letting the public vote on the name for Node 3 in the International Space Station.
This has drawn the attention of two of my favorite comedians, Dave Barry and Stephen Colbert. Barry wants to name the capsule "Buddy," while Colbert of course wants everything named after him. Both men have mobilized their massive internet armies to vote on their preferred name.
This is, in and of itself, nothing new. Internet wars have existed as long as the internet. But in previous wars, I knew to which side I belonged. In this one, I like both sides!
But the issue goes even deeper. (deeper, of course, used ironically) Colbert's army is much larger and more technologically advanced than Barry's. Colbert is winning the contest, while Buddy is in 3rd place. (Scientology's Xenu is in 2nd) So on the one hand, I could vote for buddy because Barry's side needs all the help it can get. But on the other hand, I could vote for Colbert because Buddy doesn't stand a chance of winning, and I want Colbert's total high enough that NASA can't ignore the result in favor of Serenity (the top NASA suggestion)
I am torn, but in the end, I have decided to go with Colbert. The tie-breaker is that Colbert has a documented history of trying to get things named after him, it's his "thing." Whereas Barry just thought (rightly) that it would be funny. So I urge you to go to NASA's website and vote for either Buddy or Colbert. But vote for Colbert.

My first thought after reading this post (which is usually my first thought after reading my posts) was: "this is just stupid rambling, I should delete this post."
Then I remembered that the whole point of blogging is to make people listen to my stupid ramblings. So I went ahead and posted it.

Why does Barry want to name it "Buddy"? What's the joke behind it?
The joke is that naming a space node "Budddy" is funny. There's no special inside joke that I'm aware of, it's just a funny thing to do.
Hmmm I guess from a comedic writer like Barry I would expect something a little more creative...or funny, haha.
